What Is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting is professional drain cleaning using high-pressure water to scrub the inside of drain and sewer pipes. A specialized nozzle is fed through your pipe, and water sprays in multiple directions to cut through clogs and clean the pipe walls. It’s the most thorough drain cleaning method available.
How Hydro Jetting Actually Works
Our technician threads a high-pressure hose into your drain or sewer cleanout. The hose ends in a rotating nozzle with jets pointing forward (to cut through the clog) and sideways or backward (to scrub the pipe walls and propel the hose forward). Water pumped at 1,500-4,000 PSI does the work — no chemicals, no brushes, no snakes. The pressurized water disintegrates grease, breaks up root mats, flushes scale, and pushes everything toward the city sewer.
Why Hydro Jetting Beats Snaking
A drain snake is a steel cable with a cutting head. It physically reaches the clog and punches a hole through it — water flows again, problem ‘solved.’ But the pipe walls remain coated in grease, scale, and debris. The next clog forms quickly. Hydro jetting doesn’t just clear the clog; it restores the pipe to its original interior diameter.
After a proper jetting, your line is as clean as the day it was installed. This is why we recommend hydro jetting for recurring clogs, kitchen grease lines, restaurant traps, root intrusion, and as preventive maintenance for aging sewer laterals. It’s also why hydro jetting works better than chemical drain cleaners — which can’t physically remove buildup and slowly damage your pipes.
When Is Hydro Jetting the Right Choice?
Hydro jetting is the right call when basic snaking won’t solve the underlying problem. Here’s when hydro jetting earns the investment over standard drain cleaning:
- Recurring clogs in the same drain — if your kitchen sink clogs every 3-4 months, the underlying buildup is the real problem. Hydro jetting fixes it; snaking just delays the next one.
- Grease buildup in kitchen lines — common in older LA homes with cast iron kitchen drains. Snaking punches a hole; jetting actually removes the grease coating.
- Tree root intrusion — hydro jetting cuts through root masses that have entered through pipe cracks. Often paired with sewer repair to permanently solve the access point.
- Restaurant or commercial grease lines — quarterly hydro jetting is standard maintenance for keeping commercial kitchens compliant and backup-free.
- Scale and mineral buildup — LA's hard water leaves calcium deposits inside pipes. Jetting removes years of accumulation.
- Pre-purchase or pre-renovation sewer cleaning — homeowners use hydro jetting + camera inspection to verify pipe condition before major remodels.
- Before sewer line repair — we often jet the line before trenchless repair to ensure the new liner adheres properly.
- Multi-family buildings, HOAs — semi-annual jetting prevents the kind of building-wide backups that turn into liability claims.
Hydro Jetting vs Drain Snaking — Direct Comparison
Most clogs get a basic snake. Hydro jetting is the next level — more powerful, more thorough, and longer-lasting. Here’s a direct comparison so you can ask the right questions when you call. Note: Maverick performs both, and we recommend based on what your specific situation calls for — not based on what’s most profitable for us.
| Feature | Drain Snaking | Hydro Jetting |
|---|---|---|
| What It Does | Punches a hole through the clog | Scrubs the entire pipe wall clean |
| Best For | Single clog, hair, food, simple debris | Grease, roots, scale, recurring clogs |
| Removes Buildup? | No — leaves pipe walls coated | Yes — restores full pipe diameter |
| Pipe Damage Risk (healthy pipes) | Very low | Low when matched to pipe condition |
| Pipe Damage Risk (old cast iron/clay) | Low | Possible if PSI is too high — we camera-check first |
| Time Required | 30-60 minutes | 1-2 hours including camera inspection |
| Includes Camera? | No (quoted separately) | YES — FREE HD camera included |
| Maverick Price | Flat rate (quoted before work begins) | Flat rate (quoted before work begins) |
| How Long It Lasts | Until next clog forms in same buildup | Months to years longer between clogs |
| Best Use Case | First-time clog, simple cause | Recurring clogs, grease lines, root intrusion, pre-sewer-repair cleaning |
Bottom line: If it’s a first-time clog with a simple cause, basic snaking is the right call. If you’ve had repeat issues, suspect grease or roots, or want preventive maintenance for an aging line — hydro jetting is worth the investment. We quote flat-rate before any work starts.
How a Maverick Hydro Jetting Job Works
Step 1 — Call & Schedule
Call (323) 742-4665. We discuss your symptoms, age and material of your pipes, and confirm hydro jetting is the right method. If we suspect a basic clog will solve with standard snaking, we tell you that first — no upsells.
Step 2 — On-Site Pipe Inspection
Our technician arrives in a marked Maverick truck with the hydro jet rig. Before jetting, we run our HD sewer camera through the line — both to confirm jetting is appropriate and to assess pipe condition. If we see severely degraded pipe that shouldn’t handle high pressure, we’ll explain that and recommend an alternative. Camera inspection is FREE when you proceed with jetting.
Step 3 — Written Quote
Based on the camera findings — line length, pipe condition, severity of buildup — we provide a written quote. The price is locked. If we hit complications mid-job that affect the price, we stop, explain, and get your authorization before continuing. No ‘surprise’ fees at the end.
Step 4 — The Hydro Jet Itself
We deploy the jet hose into your cleanout or accessible drain. The high-pressure water blasts grease, scale, roots, and debris from the pipe walls and flushes everything toward the sewer. We typically start downstream and pull back through the line in passes, often using different nozzles for different stages — root cutters for root masses, chain flails for hard scale, standard nozzles for grease and debris.
Step 5 — Post-Jet Camera Verification + Cleanup
After jetting, we run the camera again to confirm the pipe is clear and the walls are clean. You see the before-and-after side by side on screen. We provide you a copy of the video and a written report describing what we found and what we did. Cleanup is included. The line is fully usable immediately.
What Equipment Maverick Uses
Most LA plumbing companies don’t actually own hydro jetting equipment — they sub-contract or rent it. Maverick owns and operates our own truck-mounted hydro jet rigs. Trucks carry self-contained water tanks (300-500 gallons), high-pressure pumps, multiple nozzle types for different jobs, and the HD camera systems we use for inspection. Owning the equipment means we can dispatch same-day instead of scheduling around rental availability.
Our PSI Range and Nozzle Types
- 1,500-2,000 PSI — residential drain lines and older cast iron / clay pipes
- 2,500-3,000 PSI — standard residential sewer laterals in good condition
- 3,500-4,000 PSI — commercial grease lines, severe root intrusion, modern PVC sewer lines
- Forward-jet nozzles — clearing solid clogs straight ahead
- Multi-jet rotating nozzles — scrubbing pipe walls 360°
- Chain flail attachments — breaking up calcified scale
- Root cutter heads — cutting through invasive tree roots
FREE HD Camera Inspection
Every Maverick Hydro Jetting Job Includes a FREE HD Camera Inspection
Most plumbers charge separately for a standalone sewer camera inspection. Maverick includes it FREE with every hydro jetting service. Before we jet, we feed an HD camera through your line and show you exactly what’s inside — grease, roots, scale, cracks, anything. After we jet, we run the camera again and show you the result. You watch the live feed on screen. We provide a copy of the footage and a written report.
This isn’t a marketing gimmick. We do it for two reasons: First, it builds trust — you see the work, you see the proof. Second, it protects YOU — if your pipe has structural damage, the camera reveals it before high-pressure water makes the damage worse. No plumber should be running high pressure through a pipe they haven’t inspected.
Note: FREE camera inspection is included with every hydro jetting service. It’s also included free with sewer line repair services.

Why Choose Maverick for Hydro Jetting
Camera-First, Pressure-Second
Other plumbers will jet your line without checking the pipe first. That’s how you end up with a cracked sewer lateral and a major repair bill. We camera-inspect EVERY pipe before jetting and match the PSI to the pipe condition. If your line shouldn’t handle aggressive pressure, we’ll say so honestly.
We Own the Equipment
Most LA plumbers rent jetting equipment or sub-contract to specialists. We own our jet rigs and operate them every day. That means same-day dispatch instead of waiting for rental availability, technicians who actually know the equipment, and prices that don’t include rental markup. Our truck has it all.
FREE Camera Inspection — Always
Other companies charge separately for camera inspection on top of jetting. We include it free. You see the line before, during, and after. You keep the footage. No black-box diagnoses, no ‘trust us’ upsells. The free camera is the single biggest reason customers tell us they chose Maverick.

Hydro Jetting FAQs
What is hydro jetting?
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water — typically 1,500 to 4,000 PSI — to clean and clear drain and sewer lines. A specialized nozzle is fed into the pipe, then jets of water spray in multiple directions to blast away grease, scale, tree roots, soap buildup, and debris. Unlike a drain snake that punches a hole through a clog, hydro jetting scrubs the pipe walls clean and restores the pipe’s original diameter. It’s the most thorough drain cleaning method available.
How does hydro jetting work?
Our technician feeds a high-pressure hose with a specialized rotating nozzle through your drain access point or cleanout. Water is pumped through the hose at 1,500 to 4,000 PSI. The nozzle spins as water blasts forward to cut through clogs and sideways to scrub the pipe walls. We start the jet downstream of the blockage and pull it back through, flushing debris toward the sewer. Camera inspection before and after confirms the line is clear.
Can hydro jetting damage pipes?
Hydro jetting at appropriate PSI is safe for healthy pipes — PVC, copper, modern cast iron, and most residential plumbing. The risk comes when high pressure meets old, brittle pipes that have already lost structural integrity. Pre-1970s cast iron, clay sewer lines, and badly corroded galvanized pipes can crack under aggressive jetting. We camera-inspect aging pipes FIRST and reduce PSI accordingly. We will not run high pressure on a pipe that cannot handle it.
Hydro jetting vs snaking — which is better?
Drain snaking is right for most simple, first-time clogs — hair in a shower, food in a kitchen sink. Hydro jetting is the better choice for recurring clogs, grease buildup, root intrusion, scale deposits, and any time you want the pipe walls actually cleaned versus just punched through. If you have had the same drain snaked twice within a year, hydro jetting almost always pays for itself by lasting much longer. We recommend based on what the camera shows.
How is hydro jetting priced?
Hydro jetting in LA County varies based on line length, access conditions, and severity of buildup. Restaurant grease line jetting runs higher than residential because of frequent and severe buildup. Every Maverick hydro jetting job includes a FREE HD camera inspection so we (and you) see exactly what your pipes need before any equipment is deployed. We provide written, flat-rate quotes in advance based on the camera findings — no surprise pricing, no surcharges for nights, weekends, or holidays.
How long does hydro jetting take?
Most residential hydro jetting jobs take 1 to 2 hours from start to finish, including setup, the FREE camera inspection, the jetting itself, post-jet camera verification, and cleanup. Commercial jobs or long sewer lateral cleanings can take 2-3 hours. We do not bill by time — flat-rate pricing means we move at the pace required for thorough work, not stretched to maximize the bill.
How often should you hydro jet your sewer line?
For most LA homes without recurring issues, hydro jetting every 2-3 years as preventive maintenance is plenty. Homes with mature trees over the sewer line (Pasadena, Monrovia, older LA neighborhoods) benefit from annual jetting to prevent root intrusion. Restaurants and commercial kitchens typically need quarterly grease line jetting to stay compliant with health code and avoid backups. Multi-family buildings often schedule semi-annual service.
Is hydro jetting safe for old or aging pipes?
It can be — but only when matched to pipe condition. We camera-inspect every aging plumbing system BEFORE jetting to confirm pipe integrity. If the pipe shows significant corrosion, structural cracks, or material degradation, we may recommend repair or replacement before jetting, or use a lower PSI setting. Cast iron and clay pipes in pre-1970s LA homes especially require careful evaluation. We will tell you honestly if your pipes cannot safely handle jetting.
